When planning for your retirement, it’s important to consider the benefits behind your superannuation. Much like a savings account, your superannuation fund will not bring you a comfortable retirement on its own. Insight Superannuation can assist you with all areas of superannuation and we specialise in SMSFs.

How many members can a self-managed superannuation fund have?
A self-managed superannuation fund can have up to 4 members. All members must act as trustees or be a director of a corporate trustee. If an SMSF is to have only one member, it must have two individual trustees usually relatives and not employed by the member or a corporate trustee.
Is a self-managed superannuation fund required to register for GST?
The general rule for the GST registration is based on its circumstances and the benefit it can get. Like any other Australian entities, for an SMSF to register for GST it has to have a GST turnover (gross income minus GST) of $75,000 or more.
Can I make contribution to my SMSF after age 65?
If you are 65 to 74 at the time you’re contributing, you must satisfy Work Test that is being gainfully employed during the financial year for at least 40 hours over a period of no more than 30 consecutive days.
When can I access my superannuation balance from an SMSF?

There are several Condition of Release that can be satisfied for a member of an SMSF to access his/her balance. However the most common conditions are listed below:

    – Reaching age 65
    – Aged between Preservation Age and 64, and retired
    – Aged between Preservation Age and 64, and not retired. A member can access only up to 10% of total balance. This is called as Transition-to-retirement.

Can a self-managed superannuation fund purchase property from a related party?

An SMSF is prohibited to purchase residential property from a related party. In contrary, it is allowed to purchase business real property from a related entity at market value.
